Emma’s Food Diary #4: Louis Lunch 🍔

Hello there… long time, no see! Or long time, no write! Again I found myself being a lazy mare, neglecting my writing, my creativity, ultimately leaving my space bare of any new post in over six months. I apologise profusely; sometimes life runs away from us and we are left staggering to catch up.

Nevertheless, I am in first place again, back to my best and pumping with the drive and desire to write about and post my many thoughts and musings about the various activities and adventures I have had the opportunity to experience this past half a year.

To kick things off… how about a post about burgers?! Seems fitting, doesn’t it? This self-proclaimed burger queen has devoured a large number of golden oldies and delectable newbies these past six months, and as always, I am desperate to share my thoughts and also provide potential recommendations to any readers who may, one day, find themselves perusing the streets of Busan with an insatiable desire for a naughty burger.

Who am I kidding?! I already have one whole post dedicated to the finest burgs in the MCR with snippets here and there of those I’ve already tried in Korea BUT I just bloody enjoy writing about burgers because burgers are #fewd.

So here goessssss:

ENTER LOUIS LUNCH

Stowed away on the back road parallel to Gwangalli beach is Louis Lunch; it is a noticeable building, painted a vivid red with large windows and a sign that reads ‘BURGER BEER DRINKS FRIES’ (really, what more do you need to know?) standing outside. The interior is subtler, employing the use of a pastel colour palette to make visitors feel comfortable which is then complemented by hard word tables and leather and fabric armchairs. It also displays elegant touches here and there, either in the shape of light fittings or a white and gold sink, to give more of a classier feel to the restaurant.

The menu is extensive for a burgers only joint, listing eight different choices including the classic cheeseburger, as well as more unique sandwiches that play host to a hash brown or avocados, all of which are made from 100% Korean beef (aside from the chicken burger ofc…). Prices range between 8,000 won to 11,000 won for just the burger. An extra 3,000 won will get you another patty and a further 4,000 won gets you a set (burger, fries and a drink).

I’ve tried a few of the burgers here, none of which has disappointed. My go to is the special cheeseburger (a sandwich that has earned itself a gold star on the menu) which is made from a beef patty with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, bacon, onions and jalapenos. I get the double patty (double patty for a double fatty) and the set because YOLO. And it is a real treat! The patties are marvelously seasoned with pepper, combined with the spiciness of the jalapenos, the freshness of the salad (although I always pick out tomatoes because they make all foods encased in bread too wet… #fightme) and the tangy burger sauce and you’re on to a taste sensation. Also new depth is added knowing that a different cheese is used on the two patties if you go for the double; one laden with American whilst the other is molten with mozzie!

When ordering the set, you can expect your burger to come with a side of crispy, golden fries in a paper covered basket. Ever the perfect partner to my favourite dish, the chips at Louis Lunch add an extra oomph as they are thick cut, curling around in to an S shape and crunching in between my teeth. I love to slather them in either ketchup or the tangy burger sauce to up the ante and add even more flavour!

As well as the special cheeseburger, I have chowed down on a shrimp burger. Pretty much the same ingredients except you get four grilled shrimps above the cheesy patty which add a nice new texture to an otherwise crunch-free burger.

Last but not least, I have also had half a chicken burger. This one tastes *surprisingly* healthy as far as burgers go. It isn’t your typical stack of fried meat that you expect with a chicken burger. Instead, it is a succulent grilled chicken breast, piled high with fresh salad and a hint of the classic burger sauce. Ultimately a nice welcome alternative to a beefy, and therefore greasy, burger.

Friends of mine have branched out to try the special options; the hash brown one and the avocado burger. Their silence whilst eating spoke enough to me and their sighs of pleasure after polishing off their buns whilst brandishing a double thumbs up made me feel more than secure enough to know my incessant gabbing about “the amazing burger place just near the beach” had paid off and my recommendation had been a hit!

If you ever find yourself in dire need of a cheeky burger in Busan, please take up my recommendation. Head over to Louis Lunch by Gwangalli beach and enjoy one of their many amazing burgers!
